Two years ago Sanjel set out to design a low residue fracturing fluid system capable of meeting the ever-growing demands for increasing production from lower quality hydrocarbon reservoirs. In achieving this, Sanjel’s technical minds have successfully created a system that eliminates proppant pack damage. Preliminary regain permeability studies confirm that this system causes minimal formation damage, even in very tight, oil producing shales.
"Sanjel has taken an industry-leading step forward with the development of the new system," said company Sales Representative, Shawn Bosse. "With its ultra-low residue it will be the frac system of choice in the future."
The new system uses two water soluble chemical components and can be applied as an energized system or a pure fluid. Either application is stable at high temperatures and exhibits rapid recovery after being exposed to high shear environments.
Two high-rate (5.5 m3/min) nitrogen-energized field trials were successfully conducted at lower temperatures and both produced very stable pressure readings during and after treatment. "Our Field Operations team described the new system as being easier to pump compared to conventional surfactant based fracturing systems," said Matt Gunn, the Sanjel engineer who supervised the operations. "The field supervisor mentioned that lines were quiet, which could suggest that the system provides a more homogenous fluid and does not allow for slugs of nitrogen and liquid which would cause the line to 'jack’," continued Gunn.
"This is an exciting stage in the development process," said the system developer, Karena Ranicar. "We believe that the new system has a high potential to be utilized in a broad range of applications and we are looking forward to trialing it under increasingly challenging conditions."
